1. Analyze Your Assignment Instructions
Begin your annotated bibliography by reading your assignment instructions carefully.

Ask yourself:
- What topic am I required to research for my assignment? Did my instructor assign a topic, or can I choose my own topic to research? (If you are able to choose your own topic, conduct preliminary research on your selected topic to ensure there is enough information available.)
- How many sources should I gather for my research?
- What types of sources can I use for my assignment? (Do you need scholarly or peer-reviewed sources? Or will any type of source do?)
- From where should I get my sources? (Are you required to use sources from the library? Or can you also use sources found on the internet? This checklist can help you determine which tool can get you the best information most quickly.)
