Tips for Exhausting the Literature

Mine Citations

Mining citations is a useful technique for uncovering additional relevant sources for your topic.

When mining citations, you take relevant articles you have already found and examine their reference lists to find even more relevant research.

Mining Citations

There are three methods of mining citations that can help you quickly expand your relevant research findings:

  1. Backward Citation Mining - involves examining the references within a relevant article's bibliography
  2. Forward Citation Mining - helps you find relevant sources that have cited an original article
  3. Related Citation Mining - enables you to identify related works by comparing the bibliographies of similar articles

Check out this guide for step-by-step instructions on applying each of these citation mining strategies.
