Mining Citations

Backward Citation Mining

Backward citation mining involves examining the references within a relevant article's bibliography. This method can help you find other sources to include in your research, explore the development of a topic over time, discover theories, constructs, and methodologies used in research, and identify experts associated with the research topic.

Try the strategies below to find sources using the backward citation mining technique.

Backward Citation Mining

To start, you need at least one relevant scholarly/peer-reviewed article or dissertation.

Analyze the bibliography (or reference list) of the source. See if the author used sources that could be relevant to your topic.

Search for the journal in which the article is published in the CSU Library using the Publication Finder.

If the CSU Library does not have access, perform an online search for the article or use the WorldCat website to see if the article is available in a library near where you live.
