Tips for Exhausting the Literature

Extend Your Search

When exploring the library, you may often in the Knight Search box on the library homepage, which is a great place to start because it searches many databases at once. However, to get a comprehensive view of the library’s sources on your topic, you should extend your search to other resources that may not be searched in Knight Search.

Exploring the Library's Supplemental Sources

To find the library's Supplemental Sources, first try a search in the Knight Search box on the library homepage. Then look for the "Supplemental sources" option in the Dashboard of your search results:

Next, click on "ProQuest Searching" to search many of the other databases all at once. You can copy and paste your keywords from the previous search window.

You can select the "CSU E-Journals" option to explore and search several journals the library subscribes to individually.

Setting Up Search Alerts

Many of the CSU Library's databases offer the option of setting up search alerts. You can use database search alerts to obtain recently published scholarly articles in your field of study.

Creating database search alerts frees you from having to constantly check the library for new scholarly research on your topic; rather, you can have the content delivered directly to you as it is published.

You can set searches to run daily, weekly, monthly, or less often. When new items are found that match your search, you will be sent an e-mail message or a new entry will appear in your RSS feed.

See this guide for instructions on setting up search alerts in the library's databases.

Using Tools from Google Scholar

You can use Google Scholar's "Cited by" and "Related articles" tools to further extend your search.
